If you are an AT&T subscriber and you recently updated your iPhone to iOS 5.1, you’ve probably noticed the new 4G icon in the top left corner (shown below). What is this??? Where did it come from??? Did your iPhone mysteriously grow a 4G chip overnight? The answer is no. Nothing has changed inside your iPhone. It is still 3G. However, AT&T is using this icon as a marketing scheme to show the range of their 4G network. The idea being… you’ll be able to see their 4G coverage expand into new areas, and when the 4G-compatible iPhone is released, you’ll know exactly how far the service extends.
In other words, they’re mocking you. It’s like saying… “if you had a 4G-capable iPhone, you’d be able to take advantage of it now… but you don’t. Neener. Neener. Neener.” Am I the only person that thinks this seems kind of… well… mean spirited? Sheesh!
