Smart Screens Are Coming To New York’s Phone Booths

The city of New York houses approximately 12,800 phone booths. Since the advent of the cellular phone, these booths have seen less and less use, so the city has a plan to bring them into the digital age. Over the next 30 days, 250 of New York’s phone booths will become Smart Screens.

So… what is a Smart Screen? It’s a weatherproof 32″ LCD display that allows users to interact via a touch interface. The screens will display information about the neighborhood including nearby restaurants, stores, events, landmarks, and emergency services. Eventually, the screens will also have integrated WiFi hot spots, and facilitate Skype calls. this is a pilot program to judge the public’s interest.  If it catches on, all of NYC’s phone booths will eventually become Smart Screens.
