Q is a fictional character in the James Bond novels and films. Q (standing for Quartermaster), like M, is a job title rather than a name. He is the head of Q Branch (or later Q Division), the fictional research and development division of the British Secret Service.
Best known from the James Bonds films as portrayed by Desmond Llewelyn, Q in many ways stole the films. He was always shown in the Q division developing all sorts of great gadgets to be used by all the “00″ agents. We saw prototypes that often were “less than perfect” but somehow the gadgets always worked at the right time, and indeed strangely seemed to fit the predicaments of the most famous 00, James Bond. So as a fellow tinkerer and lover of gadgets, I feel it right to name “Q” as Geek of the Week.
MIKE: A geek who currently works as a Biologist and has an extensive science background. He is an avid user of HPC systems used for scientific research. Mike's background and working knowledge of using computers to solve problems brings a unique viewpoint to the podcast.
