Geek Of The Week: Neil Peart

One of the most influential progressive rock acts in history is the Canadian power trio known as Rush. This band’s members include bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and, this week’s GOTW, drummer Neil Peart.

Peart joined Rush in 1974 and quickly became the band’s primary lyricist. Yes… you read correctly! Even though Geddy Lee does the majority of the singing, it is Peart who does most of the lyric writing. In addition to being a lyricist, Peart came up with the concept for their 1976 album, 2112, which is based on Ayn Rand-esque dystopian society in the year 2112. Needless to say, this is a popular album amongst geek rockers. When he’s not on the road with Rush, Peart spends his spare time writing books. To date, he has published five of them.

Obviously, Peart’s geeky nature alone is deserving of this GOTW nomination, but he is also a virtuoso drummer. He has received over 30 awards from Modern Drummer and Drum! magazines over the years, including a Hall of Fame award. Peart’s musical ability is revered throughout the percussionist community. He is literally one of the greatest drummers to ever live. So there you have it. From writing to drumming, I’m proud to present Neal Peart, our 134th GOTW. icon smile Geek Of The Week: Neil Peart
