Mountain Lion Is Most Popular Mac OS Version

According to NetMarketshare’s statistics, Apple latest desktop operating system, Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, is the most popular version of Mac OS. Their figures show that 32.13% of the current installed base is running the latest version. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard holds the second place spot with 29.28%, and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion takes third place with 28.34%. Finally, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard finishes in 4th place with a solid 7.93%. While this is not entirely surprising, it is interesting to note how quickly Mac users seem to upgrade. These figures would indicate over 98% of Mac OS X users are running an operating system released after 2007, with nearly 90% running a post-2009 version.

Using the same website’s figures, the picture of the current install base for Windows is quite different. NetMarketshare claims 3 1/2 year old Windows 7 holds the #1 spot with 49.17% and 11 year old Windows XP trails slightly with 42.6%. 2007’s Windows Vista barely makes a blip with 6.8%, and Microsoft’s latest and greatest OS, Windows 8, is in a solid 4th place with a mere 1.87%. So, the real question is… what causes Mac users to upgrade stay current while Windows users trail years behind?
