First Steam Machines Go On Sale

Steam Machines have been the buzz of the gaming world since they were first announced in 2013. If you haven’t been following, a Steam Machine is essentially a PC running SteamOS (which is based on Linux) that has been specifically setup for gaming. They’re not designed to compete with full-fledged Windows gaming PCs, but they are designed to compete with consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation. Valve Software is the company behind this movement.

Well, fans of this technology can rush to the Alienware and Cyberpower online stores because the first Steam Machines are now available for pre-order. The Alienware model starts at $449 with the Cyberpower equivalent retailing for $499. Needless to say, they can be upgraded with additional memory, storage, etc. However, both machines are not expected to ship until October of this year. Even so, the Valve controller (which is necessary to play most of the games) will not be available until November. Still, its entirely possible Steam Machines will be under the Christmas Tree this holiday season… if they catch on.
