Facebook Unveils Aquila Drone

I’m not really sure if this story should be posted in the IT, Science, or Hardware category. It seems to be a mesh of all three. In any case, most of us remember when Facebook vowed to bring Internet to the third world back in 2013. Nobody was quite sure how they planned to do this… until now.

The social media network just unveiled the Aquila drone. It is a solar-powered unmanned 4-engine aircraft that has the capability to connect to communications satellites and beam Internet to the surface. The aircarft has a wingspan similar to a Boeing 737, but it resembles a wide letter V (see above). While this may sound crazy, Facebook has plans to put the robotic planes into service in the next few months. Using this technology, they should be able to bring Internet to remote parts of the world where no communication lines exist.
