WhatsApp Expands Encryption… Take That FBI!

On the heels of the recent Apple/FBI debacle the ended with a cracked iPhone, WhatsApp is expanding their encryption capabilities. The app already allowed users to encrypt chat sessions, but now also permits the encrypting of photos, videos, and voice calls. Many are saying this will stop law enforcement from being able to access data in forensic cases. Like the Apple case, some are seeing this as a bad thing while others are seeing it as a win for consumer privacy. The timing may be coincidental, or it could be planned as a snub to the FBI. In either case, it will be interesting to see what happens when the FBI wants access to some potential evidence encrypted by WhatsApp.
