Uber’s Robot Cars Hit Pittsburgh This Month

Rideshare service Uber is making waves in Pittsburgh as the company prepares to deploy a fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles. Uber-branded Volvo XC90 SUVs will hit the streets by the end of August. The vehicles have been fitted with a self-driving system that allows them to navigate Pittsburgh’s roads without human intervention. However, Uber says a human observer will ride in the driver’s seat during the pilot program. This person will have the ability to override the controls if a problem is detected. To make matters more interesting, Uber patrons who ride in one of these vehicles will receive a $0 bill. Essentially, you can test the robot taxi for free. Now that’s cool!
