Jurassic Butterfly Fossil Found

Scientists have discovered a butterfly fossil in what is being described as “200,000,000 year old pond scum.” The fossil closely resemble modern butterflies, but appears to be from the Jurassic period. This is not only the oldest butterfly fossil ever discovered, it is also predates the period in which scientists thought butterflies existed. The Jurassic period predates flowering plants, so researchers are not sure what these butterflies would’ve eaten. Presumably, they fed on sugar water from tree seeds and cones.
