Are Modular Smartdevices The Way Of The Future?

Microsoft’s new Surface Hub 2 has a feature called a processor cartridge. The name is a little misleading, but it’s the computing part of the unit (processor, motherboard, and RAM). Essentially, the Surface Hub 2 is now a screen with a removable PC. Obviously, this could be useful for servicing the device, but its also lets users upgrade the “guts” of the Surface Hub without having to buy a new screen, or vice-versa.

Microsoft has already announced plans to release a new processor cartridge in 2020. This makes us wonder if all smartdevices will go to a similar model. Modular architectures may make a lot of sense for devices that are intended to last for longer than the average PC.
