Skype Gets Bought For $8.5 Billion… By Microsoft

There were rumor circulating that Skype, maker of the popular VOIP client, was going proceed with an IPO. There was speculation about who would be among the first investors. However, these rumors were laid to rest this morning when Skype posted a press release saying they have agreed to sell to Microsoft at a price of $8.5 billion.

Formally owned by eBay, Skype was acquired for $2.6 billion in 2005. After numerous problems trying to integrate it with their market and a huge outage (caused by Windows), eBay agreed to sell to an investment firm. They accepted $1.9 billion for nearly 2/3 stake of Skype in 2009. Now they’re divesting completely. It’s an interesting move, but it really makes me wonder about the future of Skype.
