Ok, I know what you are thinking…how can the guitarist for one of the biggest and best bands ever be a geek of of the week? Easy, he has a PhD in Astrophysics. He is of course best known as the guitarist for the band Queen (one of my all time favorites) and has been tremendously successful to that end. However most people don’t know that he returned to Imperial College after a 30 year “break” to get his PhD in astrophysics. The title of his thesis is “Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud.” He has also co-authored a book called Bang! The complete history of the Universe, which has been published in over 20 languages. He is working on a second book as well, and continues his work in astronomy. Queen celebrated their 40th anniversary this year, and their music continues to be heard throughout the world. Bohemian Rhapsody is also routinely voted the best song of all time by the English music public. It should be obvious that Brian May is supremely talented, and quite worthy of the honor of being Geek of the week even though he is a geek that is also cool.

Another random fact, the guitar he’s playing in the photo above was hand built in his garage. In addition to being a musician and scientist, he’s also a luthier.
