Geek Of The Week: Niels Bohr

Geek Of The Week: Niels Bohr

Filling in for Ron this week…

This weeks geek is one of the founders of CERN (think Large Hadron Collider) and Nobel Prize winning physicist, Niels Bohr.  Bohr was a Danish physicist who made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr mentored and collaborated with many of the top physicists of the century at his institute in Copenhagen. He was part of the British team of physicists working on the Manhattan Project. Bohr has been described as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. He won the Nobel prize for his contributions to the understanding of the structure of atoms and the radiation that is emitted from them. The Bohr model of the atom is still in use today, as is his shell model. The Bohr model shows the different and unique orbits of electrons around the nucleus, and the shell model relates the chemical properties given to the atom by the arrangements of the electrons in the outermost shell of the atom. Niels Bohr, genius, Nobel Prize winner, and now Geek of the Week.
