A judge in Brazil issued an order to shut down the country’s access to WhatsApp for 72 hours. The decision was effective as of 2:00 PM local time today. Additionally, any service providers who fail to comply with this order will be fined $142,000 per day. The action stems from WhatsApp usage of encryption which was made public last month. Reportedly, the Brazilian government finds this to be problematic and has enacted a temporary ban. Ironically, WhatsApp is the most popular mobile app in Brazil. Approximately 100,000,000 people use the service.
