Geek Of The Week: Deadmau5

Geek Of The Week: Deadmau5

Over the course of 2016, I’ve featured several of my favorite electronic music pioneers, performers, and inventors at GOTWs. As the year draws to a close, I decided to add one more. This week’s geek is one of the biggest names in electronic dance music, Deadmau5 (pronounced dead mouse). Known to his friends as Joel Zimmerman, this geek has been making electronic music since 1994. He took on the persona of Deadmau5 in 2005 and has since released 8 studio albums and over 35 singles. He was the first electronic music artist to grace the cover of Rolling Stone and has been nominated for 6 Grammy awards. Deadmau5 also started a record label, appropriately called Mau5trap. ┬áThis geek is one of my personal favorite electronic performers and a huge influence.

In addition to his somewhat nerdy music career, Deadmau5 was engaged to tattoo maven and reality TV superstar Kat Von D (couple shown above). I say “was engaged” because the couple split up in 2013. It’s unfortunate. I really wanted them to stay together because Kat & Mau5 just sound like two people that belong together. Ha ha! In any case, Zimmerman continues to write, record, and perform music. His most recent album came out earlier this month and he is currently on tour to promote it. He is also teaching a Masterclass on music production. There is no doubt that Deadmau5 is an icon amongst electronic music geeks and now he is the final GOTW of 2016.
