T-Mobile Does Buy One, Get One Sale On LG G7

Yesterday, T-Mobile announced a buy one, get sale on the new LG G7 smartphone. What’s funny¬† about this deal is… the phone doesn’t even hit shelves until tomorrow. So, they’re not just selling it early, they’re selling it for half-price. This shows a strong departure from how new handsets have been handled historically. Traditionally, a phone is released and months go by before carriers offer any sort of a discount or price break.

Consumer demand for the new handset normally fosters early sales and then the discounts surface once that initial demand trails off. This is a bold move for both LG and T-Mobile to offer special deals on a pre-order. Some analysts believe it will backfire, while others think its a good idea. Regardless, it shows the trend of consumers having less interest in new handsets due to the climbing prices. When carriers stopped subsidizing smartphones, having the latest and greatest became a lot less desirable. It will be interesting to see how this technique plays out.
