Geek Of The Week: Bram Cohen

Bram Cohen is best known as the author of the file sharing protocol Bit Torrent. He grew up in New York City where he learned the BASIC programming language on his family’s home computer. In the mid 1990’s Cohen along with his friend Jim McCoy and worked on an idea they called MojoNation. MojoNation brought about the theory of breaking a file into multiple pieces on different computers then someone could download all those pieces to form one file instead of the way it was via Kazaa (or other popular peer to peer clients) where you download 1 file from 1 person. This was perfected into what is now commonly known as the Bit Torrent protocol. Cohen has since worked for Steam, a popular game streaming website. Cohen has since started Bit Torrent Inc., which now provides many companies with Bit Torrent capabilities.
