Study: Most ATMs Are Still Running Windows XP

A recent study found a large percentage of ATMs are still running 2001’s Windows XP operating system. Positive Technologies conducted a test of 26 major ATMs on the market. They found 15 of the units were running Windows XP which Microsoft sunset back in 2014. Needless to say, this leaves the machine open to a number of vulnerabilities. What’s more, 18 of the 26 were subject to a black box attack that allowed an attacker to extract money unlawfully. Additionally, 20 of 26 were vulnerable to a USB attack that allowed an adversary to retrieve data from the hard drive. This is bad news for consumers. ATM manufacturers should take this to heart.
