Geek Of The Week: Thomas Dolby

Thomas Dolby, who got his stage name from Dolby Noise Reduction, is a geek musician and producer who came to prominence in the 1980s. His songs She Blinded Me with Science and Hyperactive were Top 40 hits. The former has become somewhat of a cult classic in popular geek culture. Additionally, in the 1990s, he founded a music software company called Beatnik, based in California’s Silicon Valley. The company’s technology was used to create the original Nokia ringtone. Dolby is currently a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University teaching experimental music to new students. He did a lot for the developments of popular electronic music and now he teaches it to others. That’s pretty darn geeky in our book.
