Geek(s) Of The Week: Man Or Astro-Man

If you reach back to our list of geek rock bands from 2010, you’ll see the first name on the list is Man or Astro-Man. While they’re not a mainstream act, the band has gained notoriety in some geek circles. They are particularly fond of science fiction themes which always seem to attract a geek audience. The band was formed in the early 1990’s in Alabama.

In addition to their nerdy song content, the band did an extremely geeky thing in the late 90’s when they sent “clones” on tour. These were musicians who looked/sounded similar but had slightly different names. The first tour was known as the Alpha Clones and the second tour as the Gamma Clones. For the second tour they used female clones to make the exercise even more outrageous. The whole experiment was called the Astro-Man Genome Project. Pure geek gold!

Man or Astro-Man sounds like a blend of surf rock, new wave, and punk. To date they’ve had 8 studio albums and still play live. They are definitely a staple in the genre of geek rock, and now they’re GOTWs.
