Microsoft Decouples Cortana From Windows

Cortana is Microsoft’s digital assistant, similar to Apple’s Siri, that was originally released on Windows Phone 8. The voice software made its way to Android and iOS eventually, but also showed up on Windows 10 and other Microsoft devices. Windows operating systems have always had Cortana built-in but Microsoft aims to decouple Cortana from Windows. Reportedly, the company has already released a beta version which is downloadable from the Microsoft Store. Analysts presume future version of Windows will not come with Cortana pre-installed but instead will have the Cortana app. This move is likely not a move away from Cortana but an easier way to release new features so the company won’t have to do so via Windows Update.
