WiFi 6 Networking Arrives!

WiFi 6 officially arrived yesterday. The iPhone 11 series, which arrive Friday, are the first devices to be WiFi 6 compliant. So, what is WiFi 6 you ask? Well… remember the days of 802.11a, 802.11c, 802.11n, and others? The WiFi alliance decided this was confusing to consumers, so they quietly re-branded 802.11n as WiFi 4 and 802.11ac as WiFi 5.

The latest standard is called 802.11ax, but it will likely be referred to as WiFi 6 throughout the industry. To the consumer, WiFi 6 is faster and supports longer ranges than WiFi 4 and 5. Additionally, it provides for longer battery life in mobile devices. Like all previous versions of WiFi, it is backwards compatible but only devices that are WiFi 6 certified will be able to take advantage of the new technology.
