DoJ Investigates Google’s Acquisition Of Fitbit

Earlier this year, we heard news of Google’s parent company Alphabet having plans to buy Fitbit. The acquisition was completed last month, but now the US Department of Justice (DoJ) may have a problem with that. Reportedly, the DoJ is investigating the merger citing possible antitrust allegations. From Google’s perspective, they want to compete with Apple in the wearables market and Fitbit already has a solid consumer base. From the DoJ’s view, Google’s primary business model involves data mining and targeted ads. Alphabet having access to people’s health data could be a massive invasion of consumer privacy.
