Geek Of The Week: IG-11

Geek Of The Week: IG-11

If you’ve seen The Mandalorian on Disney+, you probably recognize this week’s geek. It takes place a few years after the events of Return of the Jedi but long before The Force Awakens. IG-11 is an assassin droid that is a member of the bounty hunter’s guild along with the show’s protagonist. His head, torso, and legs can all turn independently making him able to see and shoot 180 degrees. There is a classic scene, reminiscent of an old Western, during the first episode where IG-11 skillfully takes out several opponents wielding two blasters.

If this droid looks familiar, its because there was a similar model, IG-88, depicted in episode 5. The IG-series were manufactured by Holowan Industries during the final decades of the Galactic Republic. They were designed to be protectors and bodyguards, but many, like IG-11, went rogue and started looking for work as bounty hunters. In addition to being a great fighter, IG-11 saves the day in the season finale. He’s definitely one of the more popular characters from the show. Speaking of which, if you’re a Star Wars fan, you have to watch this show. It’s fantastic!
