Yahoo! Opens Chicken Coop Data Center

Yahoo! opened a new data center today in Lockport, New York. The new ‘green’ data center resembles a chicken coop, and thus has been nicked named the Yahoo! Computing Coop. The new facility utilizes a state-of-the-art cooling design that will conserve electricity. Yahoo! claims that this new design will consume 40% less electricity and 95% less water than a conventional data center. To put that in perspective, that’s enough power savings to illuminate 300,000 CFL light bulbs 24/7, or to power 9000 New York state homes. The water savings are equally impressive. They will save enough to provide drinking water to approximately 200,000 people. Lockport was chosen for its cool climate which makes the design even more effective. Most of these figures are mere speculation, but the DOE (Department Of Energy) was so convinced, that they gave Yahoo! a grant of almost $10 million.
