Summit Supercomputer Joins Fight Against Coronavirus

Summit, the world’s fastest supercomputer, has a new task. Scientists are using the massive computing system to help battle the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. We’ve all heard a vaccine could be as far as a year away, but researchers turned to Summit to help speed up that process. The computer was given 8000 drug compounds and ran simulations against them to see if they could theoretically inhibit Covid-19. Summit was able to run all in the simulations in a couple days, something that would’ve taken months on conventional servers, and come up with 77 possibilities for further research. This gives scientists a huge head start in finding a vaccine.
