Global Smartphone Sales Plummet

Last month, we reported the global lockdown – caused by the coronavirus pandemic – was taking a toll on the smartphone market. Additionally, this market has been struggling over the last few years as the prices of handsets skyrocket. These two factors in concert convey a sad story to mobile phone manufacturers and cellular providers. The latest statistics are rolling in, and they show the first part of 2020 was absolutely abysmal for smartphone sales. Compared to the same quarter one year ago, which was already reflecting a decline, Q1 of 2020 shows a 20.2% decrease in sales. Ouch! Add to this the fact that many providers are putting substantial efforts into 5G upgrades (something the public has not been anxious for), and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
