Geek Of The Week: Dr. John Warnock

Well you probably don’t know he is, but you have probably used his software at least once in your lifetime. Dr. John Warnock and Charles Geschke are the Co-Founders of Adobe. Warnock, who has a B.S in Mathematics, a Masters in Mathematics, & a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Computer Science), makes our GOTW list.

In 1991 Warnock outlined a system called “Camelot” which later became the Portable Document Format (PDF). Maybe you’ve heard of it. icon wink Geek Of The Week: Dr. John Warnock The PDF is one of worlds most widely used document formats. Warnock also has his own typeface/font aptly called “Warnock”.

Besides being the creator of the PDF, Adobe has created software, under Warnock’s leadership, that just about every designer uses. The main ones being Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. The latter is a relatively new standard to the industry. As Quark Xpress (the former standard) has fallen to the wayside, InDesign has become the new tool for layout. In 2005, Adobe purchased it’s main rival, Macromedia, and they now produce Macromedia’s line of products (Flash, Dreamweaver, etc) as well.┬áIn 2007, Adobe released Lightroom, which was intended to be a direct competitor of Apple’s Aperture.

Warnock has forever changed the way everyone emails, designs, and types. He is a true pioneer in the world of graphic design and printing.
