Google made a big announcement this week at their Google I/O conference in San Francisco. They announced two new portable computers, called Chromebooks, manufactured by Acer and Samsung (the latter model is shown below).

As the name implies, these new netbooks will ship with ChromeOS installed and orders will be accepted starting June 15. The Atom-powered Acer model will feature an 11.6″ screen and weigh in at 2.9 lbs. The Samsung model is also Atom-powered but features a slightly larger 12.1″ screen. This model weighs in a 3.3 lbs. Both Chromebook models have internal HD cameras, USB 2.0 ports, and integral 4-in-1 memory card readers. These new laptops are said to boot in a mere 8 seconds, and each Chromebook includes both 802.11n networking, as well as 3G.
They look promising. I’m anxious to get my hands on one of these. Depending on the price… I may pick one up.
It looks like they’re deploying a desktop version as well.
