New AMD Opteron Chips Have 16 Cores

Silicon chip maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) released the new Opteron 6200-series of microprocessors earlier today. This new processor design, codenamed Interlagos, can support up to 16 cores on a single chip, more than any other X86 processor. AMD claims an impressive 25-30% performance gain over their previous Opteron 6100 12 core chip. Clock speeds range from 1.6 – 2.6 GHz with an efficiency rating of 4.375 watts per core. The new architecture will support up to 12 DIMMs per CPU giving a theoretical maximum of 384 GB of RAM. Wow! These things are impressive!
